Bishop’s Story- Part 3
The Ride Home
This was it, the moment I looked at Tiny and said "this is gonna change our lives, are we ready for this?"
All secured, GPS set and away we went. I was nervous, is he going to bark the whole time?
Much to my surprise, he didn't make a peep. He laid down and was as cool as a cucumber. We had made potty/gas stops and I walked him out and around. He acted like he had known me for years. I guided him back into the car, and like before.... he jumped right into the kennel and settled in.
I couldn't believe it. I had set up plans to stay with my friend at the half way point again. I think her family wanted to meet him, but the drive was going so well I decided to drive straight back.
If you know me, a 12 hr drive has been a common theme for me over the years so "it's not that bad." We hit some unpleasant weather on some of the route, and yet Bishop didn't care.
He pretty much slept most of the way home.
We pull in the drive, and he walked in and settled right in. "Welcome home buddy." It was one of the easiest transitions I have experienced.
Over the next few days, it was determined he was staying with me. We got to learn each other, and one of the things that helped more than anything was the packet of instructions. I couldn't understand why he wouldn't settle, and then I read he likes sleeping under blankets. Oh, ok... so I would lift up the blanket and he would curl right in. He wouldn't go out in the rain, but then I read he will go out if you put his raincoat on. Oh, ok... so the coat came out and he went out. I was so grateful to have been given that packet as it made it easier for us to learn each other.
One night, while reading things over (again) I saw he had a chip, giving instructions with a number to transfer it.
I contacted the number and started having conversation to transfer. During the conversation, it was disclosed this was his previous owner.
OH, so many questions I wanted to ask! He was very polite, and asked me questions as well about Bishop. I told him, if he ever wanted to check in on him he was more than welcome to reach out. He told me he would share his puppy pictures with me.
Days passed, weeks passed and I hadn't gotten the pictures. Then one day I get a text, explaining to me a Google drive folder was shared with his puppy pictures. He apologized it took so long.
The pieces of Bishop were coming together, I was able to see his past ....use it in the present...and never have an unknowing for his future.
I shared with him some of what we had accomplished already, and he seemed happy and at peace with Bishop's new future.
Bishop’s new future
The one question I had to ask "how did you come up with his name?"
He laughed and explained it was his partners favorite X-men character.
I NEVER would've guessed that! LOL
I had to look it up, and Bishop was on the X-men police force. I couldn't help but laugh. Seriously?
For a rescue, this was one of the most beautiful experiences one can have in that situation. I wish all rescues went this way. The rescue was excellent to work with. The fact that they passed along his things was amazing. The instructions and being able to chat with the previous owner brought balance to the situation because the guessing game was taken out of it.
There are some situations in life you know were just meant to be...and I will say, this is one. At the time, I was not prepared for, had no plan for another dog.... but I had a gut feeling telling me he needed to come home and I followed it. I did not expect I would gain a partner in crime....I gained a best friend.
It feels we have been together for a lifetime. I know every year we mark the gotcha day, but you fooled me because the reality is....you got me
a bond so strong
